Not because I am trying to fit in at university, not because I am trying to look like some sad “accidental chinese hipster” from the blog of the same name, not because I am going hiking in the woods, but I have been for a while searching for a fabulous backpack to double as a handbag. The reason is purely practical; I seem always to be carrying about three different things, my handbag, a shopping bag, and a bag to transport stuff from car to office. I am in need of a more handsfree type of arrangement, particularly since I talk with my hands. Last year I saw a Marc Jacobs one which attracted me because of its name – the Domo Arigato bag. But it was over $200 so I didn’t buy it at the time – was I mad? – I have just found it again on shopbop.com and looking at the other two I like, it seems positively cheap. So I am buying it.
Anyway, I think a woman of fifty should certainly see herself as an urban backpacker as she weaves through the city streets on her journey, load evenly balanced, arms free to wrestle with whatever comes her way….
